We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and community of Payson Groff, whose passing at the age of 15 is an unimaginable loss. During this time of profound grief, we hold her loved ones in our thoughts and prayers as we honor the bright and meaningful life she lived.
Payson Groff, born on March 8, 2011, in Kankakee, Illinois, was a student at Herscher High School who carried within her a remarkable sense of purpose, curiosity, and determination far beyond her years. She dreamed boldly of attending Northwestern University and becoming a lawyer—an aspiration that reflected her ambition, intelligence, and desire to make a positive impact in the world.
Payson embraced life with energy, creativity, and joy. She was a loving older sister who took great pride in her role within her family. She enjoyed art, drawing, softball, and track, and found happiness in simple, everyday moments—playing Fortnite, collecting Monster High dolls, and sharing laughter with friends. Her creative spirit shone brightly through her TikTok cooking series, “Cooking with Good Looking,” which she created alongside her best friend Natalie, showcasing her humor and imagination.
She loved the outdoors, fireworks, and traveling—especially trips to Panama City Beach, where she found peace and happiness. Deeply grounded in her faith, Payson was a member of Faith Baptist Church and was known as a devoted follower of Jesus.
Payson is survived by her parents, siblings, grandparents, extended family, and many close friends who cherished her deeply. She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Judy Arnold.
As arrangements are made for visitation and services at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home and Faith Baptist Church, her community comes together in remembrance and support. Though her life was far too short, Payson’s light, love, and dreams will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
