With deep sorrow, the community of Hobart, Indiana is mourning the passing of Samantha Jo Hoopingarner, who died on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the age of 41. Her sudden passing has left her family, friends, and loved ones grieving the loss of someone who played a central and deeply cherished role in their lives.
Samantha was born on November 30, 1984, in Valparaiso, Indiana, and is lovingly remembered by her parents, Howard and Betty Hoopingarner. She is also survived by her children—Sophia, Luca, Ava, and Asa Barrientes—who were at the very heart of her world. Her love for them was constant and unwavering, shaping much of how she moved through life and the care she showed others.
She is also survived by her siblings, Philip (Elizabeth Vale) Hoopingarner, Charles Hoopingarner, and Dee Dee (John) Nunez, as well as her niece Rachelle Cummings, and her companion Dante Bily. Her beloved dog, Minnie, held a special place in her daily life, often accompanying her on walks and quiet moments in nature.
Samantha was preceded in death by several close family members, including her grandparents, siblings Kurtis Hoopingarner and Brandie Furlong, and several aunts and uncles. Their memory is now joined with hers in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
She will be remembered as a vibrant, creative, and deeply expressive person. Those who knew her speak of her love for painting, music, and journaling—outlets through which she shared her thoughts, emotions, and imagination. A funeral service will be held at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home – Portage Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026, followed by burial at Heritage Cemetery, with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m.
